US Arizona Territory Fort Grant Photos, 1896, Lot of Three
Item #59924 : Original era photography. Pre-Statehood, Arizona Territory, 3 large format images of scenes from Fort Grant in 1896. The images measure 8x6 inches each, and are mounted to 12x10 inch mounting board. Each image is identified as to content. Established in 1865, being a continuation of the US Army's presence begun in 1861. Moved in 1872 to the southwestern slope of Mount Graham, abandoned by the Army in 1905. Billy the Kid was briefly incarcerated in the Guard House at Fort Grant in 1877, the fort was active during the Apache Wars of the 1880's. Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan series, was stationed here in 1896.
