Item #68697 : Original period manufacture. Recently purchased out of an old collection, is this 1879 India pattern royal army officers service frock. A bit of a project, but the bones are great. Light weight red wool coat, five button front, white wool piping to the front, bottom hem, shoulder traps, with a white wool collar. At present, there are four, officer quality, regimental buttons for the Border Regiment, Two embroidered wire rank pips on each strap for a 1st Lieutenant. On the left chest is the ribbon for a Zulu campaign medal. Elaborate cuff piping for a junior officer. Black silk lined collar, white silk lined sleeves with an abbreviated red silk body lining. The coat was definitely intended for hot weather wear. No mothing to speak of, but some fraying to the left side, lower lining area, seams are tight, and the neck closure hook is present and complete. As far as I can tell, these were worn on campaign up until the late 1880's by British officers, with the coat being appropriate for wear for a regiment with white collar facings. Size about a 38.
