Item #55383 : Original period manufacture. According to the book, "Gun Tools, Their History and Identification" by Shafter, Rutledge & Dorsey, this tool was one of the longest-lived tools in Army service. It saw service from 1855 until at least 1900. It was listed in the following US Army Ordnance manuals, 1855 Rifle Musket, 1861 Ordnance Manual, 1866 Rifle Musket, 1874 Rifle, Carbine, Pistol manual. During the Civil War these were issued on the basis of one tool for every 10 weapons. All steel construction with a blue finish, unmarked, stock photo, minor details will vary.
