Item #53103 : Original era manufacture. Gilded silver badge with a red silk ribbon and decorative suspension bar. Engraved on the reverse; "Presented to Joshua G. Galloway, Co. G. 44th O.V.I., by Encampment 82, U.V.I.. Joshua Galloway enlisted in the 11th Ohio Infantry in April 1861, in September of that year he again enlisted, this time in the 44th Infantry. He served with this regiment until January 1864, when he and others transferred into the 8th Ohio Cavalry. He served for the remainder of the war with the 8th Ohio, becoming a prisoner of the Confederacy in January 1865. During the brief service time of the 8th Ohio Cavalry, they suffered the loss of 210 officers & men due to combat and disease. The Union Veterans League was similar to the GAR, but smaller in size, as its membership requirments were more restrictive, with a prospective member needing a minimum of three years military service to join.
