Original era manufacture. An unusual canteen, to be sure, but a near identical pattern is held in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, with a provenance dating back to the Revolution. During the Civil War it was carried by a Confederate Soldier, a grandson of the original owner.Red earthenware construction, with a spout at the top, and a old leather strap used presumably as a belt strap. The canteen is quite sound, with only minor chipping on the lip of the spout. Comes with a copied page of the book "Civil War Canteens" by Sylvia & O'Donnell, giving details on this pattern canteen and its use dating back 400 years.
