FORT VERDE ARIZONA STATE PARK LIVING HISTORY PROGRAM 2022

Fort Verde State Historic Park May at the Fort This month, May 21st 2022 the Fort Verde Interpretive Association will be continuing its spring programming entitled, INFANTRY BLUE. This program will discuss the Infantrymen and their dependents stationed at Fort Verde. The branch color for the infantry from 1851 until 1881 was Prussian blue, the first ten years of the Fort's existence on its current location, thus the title of the program. Interpreters will discuss uniform, weapons, accoutrements and more as they explore life at the post. Volunteers need to arrive by 9:00 am in order to be ready for the Fort's opening at 10:00 am. We will finish the initial round of garden planting at this time. This will include reseeding of some of the earlier crops as well as plant the squash, pumpkins and melons that will take up the east end of the garden. Our hope is that some of this produce will be used in foodways programming later this summer. We are having major success with weeds and not so much with produce, but Park Staff have solved some of the watering problems so that we are hoping for a good summer and fall. Later in the month, May 30th is Memorial Day, known originally as Decoration Day. Proposed by General John Logan in 1866 as a day to honor the dead from the late war, he based it on a pre-war Southern custom of decorating family member's graves as a form of remembrance. The first national celebration of Decoration Day took place May 30, 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery. As time has gone on it has become a day to remember the fallen of all of the country's wars. A presentation of original Grand Army of the Republic memorabilia and guest speakers, will be on hand at the Fort that day. If you would like to come out and do some interpretation, your presence would be most welcome. Please let us know in advance for planning purposes.
