Item #65959 : Original era manufacture. A sound example of this well made 152 year old cartridge box. Never officially adopted for regular army use, these ended up being used by State National Guard and Militia units, hence the generic oval plate on the flap with the letters NG. Inside is wooden block drilled to accept 20 rounds of rifle or carbine ammunition. Numerous patent and retailer markings on the front side of the pouch. Basically sound leather securing strap which is missing it's brass reinforcement escutcheon around the stud hole.
