Philippines, Spanish American War, Insurrection Era, Souvenir Lahot
Item #65749 : Original era manufacture. When this well made old knife first came into our hands, I initially regarded it as a WWII souvenir. However, after taking a good look at it's quality of craftsmanship, I think there is a better than average chance that it dates to an earlier era. American Servicemen have been avid souvenir hunters throughout our history, that holds true for just about a soldier, in any era of the World. The knife I believe represents a "Lahot" pattern, measuring 23 inches in overall length including the scabbard. The blade itself measures 16 inches with a nicely executed stippled decoration on the obverse, and what might be a trademark of a M or W on the ricasso. Simple brass guard and ferrule with a horn grip and brass pommel cap. There is chipping to the horn grip on the upper edge of the pommel. Nicely decorated brown leather scabbard with a pointed end. The tip of the blade has broken through the tip of the scabbard.
