Swords British
British Victorian Era, 1845 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword, Toronto Retailer, Rifles Rgt

Item #64716 : Original era manufacture. Victorian era, 1845 pattern Infantry officers sword with the name Toronto etched onto the reverse ricasso. The remainder of the maker/retailer name has been obliterated for some reason. However, the proved disc on the opposite side may provide a possible clue, as it's design closely resembles the disc used by Dole & Company, Clowes & Woodward of Dublin Ireland. Other firms used a similar style brass disc, however the Irish connection must be factored in because of the two Fenian invasions which occurred in 1866 and 1870, when Irish ex-patriots based in the US, invaded Canada in an attempt to overthrow the government and hold Canada in ransom for Irish freedom. The polished steel blade measures 32.5 inches in length and is in gorgeous condition for it's age. It runs straight and true, with original etching along both sides of it's length. Zero corrosion issues, with original frosting remaining inside the etched panels. Victoria's cypher on the reverse side of the blade, and on the obverse, a regimental badge with scroll below etched with the word Rifles. The Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment was formed in 1840 for service in Canada, and disbanded in 1870, an interesting coincidence considering the aforementioned events. Original leather bumper at the base of the blade, steel basket guard decorated with a Rifle Regiment badge and Queen's crown. Fishskin wrapped grip bound with triple strand copper wire. Steel patina finish scabbard which is quite clean for it's age and free of dents. An interesting sword worthy of further research.

Price: $595.00
