US M1833 Dragoon Sabre, Ames Cutlery 1839, M.P.L. Inspector
Item #61195 : Original era manufacture. Polished steel blade measuring 34 inches in length, with clear markings on the reverse ricasso, N.P. Ames, Cutler, Springfield, 1839, with W.S. sub-inspectors below. These initials can also be seen on the obverse quillon disc, and scabbard drag. The Army inspector initials, M.P.L. (Major Mann Paige Lomax) are visible on the top of the guard above the quillon, and also on the scabbard drag. The bright finished blade runs straight and true, free from any major edge nicks beyond a few tiny nail catchers. The original leather bumper is in place at the base of the blade. Deep brass patina finish to the three branch guard, with no breaks or distortion of the branches. About 40% of the original leather wrapping remains, with exposed wood surface comprising the balance of the grip. For a quick cosmetic fix, a light covering of black paint would work nicely. Single strand of finely twisted wire binding. Near dent-free, dark patina finish, steel scabbard with both suspension rings intact. An honest example through and through, never taken apart and "restored", with a very clean 1839 dated blade.
