Item #64169 : Original period manufacture. A large grouping of documents, newspaper clippings and photography, pertaining to the brief but eventful military career of 1st Lt. John J. Hatch, 353rd Fighter Group. Lt. Hatch was credited with two German FW 190's, prior to have been listed as MIA on the 5th of August 1944. On that day, while returning from an escort mission, Lt. Hatch reported that his plane had sustained damage and that he was heading back to base. Later, he radioed that he was going to have to bail out over the North Sea in sight of the English Coast. He was seen to parachute and land in the water off of Ipswich England, rescue boats were dispatched but he was never found. The documents consist of official USAAF documents pertaining to the incident, a framed photo of Lt. Hatch as an Aviation Cadet, numerous period newspaper clippings regarding his wartime service and the downing of the two German fighters.
