Original era manufacture. A well made sword with a polished curved steel blade measuring 32 inches in length. The blade is clean, no edge nicks, it runs straight and true with a sharp point. There is some scattered light staining and light surface corrosion along its length, we have not made an effort to clean this at all, should turn out very nice after a light bath.No makers markings on the ricasso that we could see, the leather bumper is in place at the base of the blade. Gilded brass, single branch guard, with fishskin wrapped grips bound with a single strand of twisted brass wire. Of the wire grip wrapping, only about 50% remains. The scabbard body is of steel, showing an old silver paint finish, with a brass throat, chape and suspension ring loops. There is a fairly sizable dent on one side towards the tip, but it does not inhibit the movement of the blade. It has been suggested by one of our collector/friend that this may be a US M1872 Artillery officer, it fits the pattern, but whoever made or sold this sword back in the day was certainly stingy with the markings. Thanks Dale for the heads-up.
