Item #69619 : Original period manufacture. Standard hooked guard type 30, bright finished blade in good repair, black painted steel scabbard, with typical worn finish to the wooden grips. All in all an average condition WWII Japanese bayonet. However, hand inscribed into the scabbard finish is Iwo Jima Sept 1945, and, on the blade, again hand inscribed is C.C.ROGERS on the obverse, and on the reverse IWO JIMA 1945. Turning to our Ancestry account, we find several listings for a Clyde C. Rogers, Assistant Cook USMC, who served in the HQ 1st Battalion 27th Marines, 5th Division USMC. Muster rolls show him serving with this unit from October 1944-October 1945. During the assault on Iwo Jima the 5th Marine Division formed the left flank of the attack, sustaining over 8500 casualties during the battle.
