Original era manufacture. Scarlet wool undress jacket and vest, circa 1880's, as worn by an officer of the 7th Dragoons. During the Egypt Campaign of 1882, the 7th Dragoons fielded a squadron which charged at Kassissin, and the entire regiment charged at Tel El-Kebir in September of that year, where it suffered no loss. Overall the ensemble is of fine quality construction and materials, however it has suffered the attentions of the uniform collector's nemesis, the clothing moth. Most of this attention can be seen on the scarlet wool jacket and matching vest. Quilted silk lining to the interior of the jacket, with decorative exterior gold brocade with heavy gold wire embroidery and black velvet trimmed cuffs and collar. Size small, perhaps a 34 or 36, missing one epaulette button. Single small crown insignia on each strap, denoting the rank of Major, likely a rank increase after the death of Queen Victoria.
