Original era manufacture. This wonderful old relic bears a metal tag on its reverse, stating 'SUPERSTRUCTURE', and on the front another reading, H.M.S. Victory, Society For Nautical Research 1922, No. 25.Launched in 1765, the Victory gained everlasting fame as Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship during the pivotal battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson died during the battle, yet the Victory has lived on, thanks to a major reconstruction effort undertaken in 1922. She now enjoys the fact that she is the oldest sailing ship afloat. The artifact is a large wooden "U", with a securing pin passing through holes hand drilled through the top. The U is mounted to a thin wooden base which has an old fashioned blue paper covering on its underside.Presumably fragments from the Victory as our example, were mounted and sold to the public to help defray the costs during her reconstruction in 1922. Similar measures were undertaken here in the USA when the USS Constitution was restored in 1927. Measures 6 x 2 x7 inches, the base 8 x 4 x 1/2 inches
