Original era manufacture. A dark steel patina finish bayonet with a 17 inch blade, and measuring just under 22 inches overall.The base of the socket opening measures 25 mm,with the socket itself measuring 4 inches in length. At the base of the elbow, where the blade shank attaches to the socketis an oblong foot, or base, which makes the attachment.See page 39, British& Commonwealth Bayonets, by Skennerton & RichardsonThe steel displays a dark finish but no evidence of pitting or corrosion on the flat faced blade.With faint unit markings of a 3 over 24 (3rd Company, 24th Regiment of Foot)visible at the base of the blade.The 24th Regiment of Foot, served inNorth America during the War of Independence, forming part of General John Burgoyne's army. This armysurrendered to the Americanarmy commanded by General Horatio Gates, after being surroundedduring the Saratoga campaign inNew York, October 17, 1777. A wonderful old bayonet with a great history.
