Original era manufacture. This rather unusual example was purchased as part of an advanced bayonet/sword collection last year. The gentleman had collected for over 40 years and had reached an age when he felt it was time to let it go. This example he had noted as unusual, sadly, the details of its production are unknown to us. I have basically identified it using Kiesling's, page 526, figure 175, but I don't think it is quite correct. At any rate, it has a polished steel blade measuring just under 12 inches in length. nice wood grips secured with two brass rivets with an oil/clean-out hole towards the pommel on each side. Polished steel pommel and guard. The blade does not have the raised center ridge as seen on other 1888 bayonets, rather it is offset towards the quillon side. Simple black leather scabbard with a riveted leather belt loop. Very clean bayonet. What is it really?
