Original era manufacture. Polished steel blade measuring 32 inches in length, with etched panels on each side, on the obverse the emblem of the Royal Marines, and on the reverse, the Cypher for King Edward VII and the name, Royal Marines.'Maker or retailer marked on the ricaso J. Gieves & Son, Portsmouth, London & Devonport, and on the obverse a six pointed star with a brass proved disc. On the top of the blade spine are three hand carved XXX's, with a matching marking on the scabbard throat. The blade is clean, no evidence of sharpening, with a few tiny nicks in the edge, more felt than seen. It presents a steel patina finish with scattered areas of light staining and old cleaned surface corrosion near the tip, no deep pitting.Nickel finished steel basket guard with Edward VII's cypher in the scrollwork. Fishskin wrapped grip, bound with two strands of wire. There is scattered areas of staining and bubbling to the finish especially inside the guard towards the pommel. The blade and guard fit well, do not rattle, overall this pattern sword is a formidable weapon in the hands of a skilled soldier.Dent free steel scabbard with a bright finish likely re-plated at some point in it's life, which makes sense to me as that is the part of the sword most often seen.
