Original era manufacture. 1853 pattern enlisted cavalry sword, mated to a later pattern scabbard. The polished steel blade measures 35 inches in length, running straight and true, with evidence of service use on the cutting edge. There are several dressed nicks in the edge and marks of a service sharpening. The surface of the steel has a nice gloss to it, with no severe corrosion issues. Steel three-branch basket guard, with a leather wrapped grip secured with five steel rivets. The all steel scabbard is of a pattern introduced in 1885, yet it fits the blade properly. Few spots of service denting, minor evidence of cleaned corrosion. Overall an honest sword which evidently had a long service life.
