Original era manufacture. German made bayonet for the British short naval rifle, 1858. Carl Reinhardt Kirschbaum proof mark on the reverse ricasso, 27 inch steel blade, with a steel cupped guard.Even, steel patina finish to the blade and guard, no deep corrosion pitting. Pressed leather grips with a checkered design to the surface, sound condition, no cracks or chips.Original leather scabbard with a black painted finish, steel chape, with a black dyed buff leather frog. The scabbard is sound, the stitching is basicallyintact, thereis a crease in the leather just above the chape. When the blade is inserted in the scabbard there is a 1 inch gap between the base of the guard and scabbard throat. The likely culprit is the crease in the leather and shrinkage over time.
