Original era manufacture. Polished steel blade measuring 32 inches in length, with etched panels on each side of the blade. Dark steel patina finish, testifying to long service and hard use in the field. The blade runs straight and true, the tip has been lightly sharpened, and there are some scattered minor nicks in the cutting edge. On the obverse ricasso is a small brass disc, displaying the word "Proved" and the letter P. In the excellent collector reference "British Military Swords 1786-1912" by Withers, this is identified as the mark of Hobson & Sons circa 1890. Well formed elaborate brass guard with Queen Victoria's cypher prominently displayed on the basket, with a non-foldingaspect to the short side of the guard. Fishskin wrapped grip, bound with single strand wire. The grip covering shows wear and missing portions, again testifying to arduous service use.Dark steel patina finish to the scabbard, two suspension rings, and the drag has been worn down to the body of the scabbard. This is the pattern sword carried byBritish Infantry officers throughout the Crimean War, India Mutiny and all the little wars of the 19th century up to the Boer War.
