Original era manufacture. Around 1860, due to a perceived threat of a French invasion, numerous volunteer rifle unitswere organized throughout the Kingdom. One of which was the Tower Hamlets Rifles, a district in eastLondon, north of the Thames river. This officers pattern shako is in a ribbed, brown-gray wool with red wool piping at the crown and down the rear, withsilver wire piping at the base of the shako, just above the black patent leather band. There is a very nice quality silver marked officers cap badge at front displaying the Queens crown at top. Black patent leather visor with a bound edge, and green underside. Light tan colored, Moroccan leather sweatband, with a light brown silk lining. Some of the stitching at the rear of the sweatband has come loose on one side, and the visor is beginning to pull away from the body of the shako a bit. There is a very nice red/blue wool pom-pom with silver colored base bearing Queen Victoria's cypher. The metal storage can has a black painted finish with a carrying handle at top and a folding clasp at one end, the locking loop is missing. Overall quite sound for its age and of very nice quality.
