Original era manufacture. Nicely decorated Austrian WWI brass shell casing made into a humidor. Engraved around the body is May 4th 1917 The Sinking of the Transylvania and The Glorious Dead. Once part of the Jane A. Kimball Trench Art Collection. The SS Transylvania was a British passenger liner of the Anchor Line. Employed as a troopship during the war, she was struck by two torpedoes fired by the German U-63 on the 4th of May 1917. She was enroute to Alexandria with a full complement of soldiers, nurses and crew of over 3,000 souls. Traveling near the Italian coast, she sank in less than an hour after the second torpedo hit, taking down with her over 400 men including her Captain.
