Original era manufacture. British Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, awarded to 290965 Jeremiah Crowley Leading Stoker, HMS Vivid. Silver patina finish to the planchet, replaced ribbon.Jeremiah Crowley was born in 1880, joining the Royal Navy in January 1899, and reenlisted in January 1911, transferring to the Coast Guard in May 1919.He served aboard numerous ships and shore installations during his service time; perhaps the most interesting of his shipboard experiences occurred aboard HMS Irresistible March 1914-March 1915.HMS Irresistible was a Formidable Class, Pre-Dreadnought battleship commissioned in 1902. Assigned to the Dardanelles Campaign in February 1915, she took part in numerous unsuccessful attacks on the Ottoman Forts located there. On the 15th of March 1915, she struck a mine, which disabled her engines; without power she drifted towards the Ottoman shore batteries which began a terrific cannonade upon the helpless ship. Her crew was forced to abandon her, losing 150 of their shipmates during the action. Despite efforts to tow her to safety, the Irresistible drifted closer to the Ottoman positions, and sank. With copied service record.
