Original era publication and photography. This interesting lot was purchased at auction in the UK around 20 years ago by a local collector. The lot is centered around a copy of the book "On Active Service", published by William Whitelock Lloyd (1856-1897)around 1890, and concerns itself regarding the campaign in Africa in 1879.Lloyd himself served during this campaign with the24th of Foot, a regiment made famous by the disaster at Isandlwana, and later the successful defense of Rorke's Drift. On Active Service, features 20 colored plates of service life during this campaign with excellent detail. The book measures 9x12 inches, shows some wear around the cover edges but is quite sound for display and perusal. Lloyd quit the army around 1882 to pursue a full-time career as an illustrator, beingemployed for a time as the official artist of the P&O Steamship line, as a reprinted copy of his book"P&O Pencillings", originally published around this time period is also included. Several copies of a letter written to Lloyd's friend Bulmar, dated May 1879, are included. The letter is quite descriptive, speaking of the preparations for the advance on the King's Kraal at Ulundi, and a report by a fellow officer of the skeletons of the 24th Foot, visible at the foot of Isandlwana Mountain. Lastly, a grouping of six, original, sepia tone images taken during the campaign are included. The matts measure 11x14 inches, with each individual image measuring roughly 5x8 inches. Each imagehas a penciled notation below, with some of the titles being; Zulu Kraal, Ulundi, and a military funeral. This is a nice little grouping, with a great deal of historical interest, too bad the letter is only a copy but it helps keep the price down. Of interest is the fact that in 2012,nine original watercolors done by Lloyd during this campaign were sold by Sotheby's for over $70,000.Lot's of fun for a mere fraction of the price...
