US Indian War Era, Army Forager Shotgun Belt, 1870's
Item #69555 : Original period manufacture. Field modified black leather military pattern belt with a brass eagle plate and catch. The belt body is adorned with 26 brass shotgun shell tubes, each bearing the following, Pat. Apr 16-78, P&J (Pooler & James) Serena Ill. Inserted into one of the tubes is a single brass bodied shotgun shell, marked on its base, Winchester Model 12. In addition, there are two substantial leather loops securing a brass D-Ring for a now missing shoulder strap. Hand written in white paint is EB 14, which stands for Equipment Belt number 14, which is how our old friend Jack Smith of Tombstone marked items in his collection. Terri and I had the privilege of viewing Jack & Janey's incredible collection of US militaria about 25 years ago. When Jack passed, we purchased a number of articles from his collection, with this belt being one of them. In turn another old friend purchased it from us for his collection about 20 years ago, and now we offer it again, as he has also gone to his reward. The belt is solid, with the leather showing evidence of an old oiling, with one weak spot just below the adjusting hook. One of a kind, field modified belt, perhaps for an officer or company forager.
