Original era manufacture. The Yataghan shaped blade is basically bright but does show scattered areas of surface corrosion and light pitting. The tip is sharp and the blade has not been sharpened. Nice unmodified brass grip, working lock button, with the number 766 on the top of the grip and blade spine. The scabbard is sound with unit markings just below the upper fitting. The t stitching has begun to open up, however both the tip and brass throat are securely attached. The scabbard throat side screw is present. The Werder Rifle was adopted by Bavaria prior to the Franco-Prussian War with limited issue, mostly to Jaeger Battalions during that conflict. It was arguably the best rifle used by either side during that War. The Werder Rifle remained in service with the Royal Bavarian Army long after the adoption of the 1871 pattern Mauser rifle. Subsequently many of the Werder bayonets grips were modified.
