Original era manufacture. This sharp-edged little sword has graced the wall in our collecting room, after having been purchased at one of Bob & Danielle's West Coast Military Shows several years back. A man came wandering by with the sword in his hands, proudly proclaiming that he had just "cleaned it up". Well cleaning he did, mostly in the area of polishing the grip and guard. The blade measures 21.5 inches in length, and is quite sharp. There are a few spots of cleaned corrosion, with a nick or two in the edge. On the obverse ricasso there is a deeply struck makers mark. Two piece guard and grip. I had a hard time identifying this, but found a very similar example as having been sold in the 1996 Smithsonian Auction, conducted by Butterfield & Butterfield. There it was identified as a pattern 1770. These notes I wrote down, and taped to the reverse of the blade. After our recent move, a number of my research books have not resurfaced, including the Smithsonian auction catalog. No doubt still in one of our as yet unopened boxes. No more room on the wall for this guy, now it's time to go in your collection.
