Original period manufacture. This is a great old sword, but one we know little about. We believe that it dates from the late 18th, or early 19th century and because of the double-headed eagle found on each side of the blade, we believe to be of either Austrian or Russian origin. The blade measures 25 inches in length and is just under 2 inches wide at the base of the blade. Two crowns and a letter cypher are to be seen on each side of the blade. The blade is rather thin and we believe would have been carried by a light cavalry, such as a Hussar regiment. The blade finish is quite dark with old cleaned corrosion near the tip. Gilded brass single branch guard with protruding langets, flat capped pommel. The grip was wrapped in leather over wood of which only 50% remains. No scabbard.
