Original era manufacture. Marble rectangular base with a fragment of a German artillery shell, fired during the siege and subsequent bombardment of the fortress city of Strasbourg France which began on August 14,1870. The base measures 5 x 3.75 x .5 inches, the top of which is scoured from the shell fragment pivoting on the surface for the past 150 plus years. We have several similar examples from this famous siege in our own collection at present and we just can't keep it all!
