Original era manufacture. Nice set in its original frame with the medal pinned to the document as is the French custom, no glass in the frame. The medal was presented in 1912 to Philibert Morel, soldier, who served with the 76th Regiment of the Line during the 1870-1871 War. On the reverse of the frame is a handwritten note perhaps telling of his experience during that war which resulted in the defeat of the Second Empire and the abdication by Napoleon III. The 76th Regiment served with the 2nd Corps (General Frossard)of the Army of the Rhine and fought at the battle of Mars-la-Tour in August of 1870. No doubt Soldat Morel went into captivity with the rest of the garrison of Metz in October of the same year. Great little piece of history.
