Original period manufacture. Standard issue M1866 Chassepot bayonet, with brass grip and Yataghan blade. Captured during the Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871 and modified by the Germans with the removal of the standing loop on the scabbard and its replacement with one of a German style. The blade shows an overall steel patina, with evidence of old cleaned corrosion. The guard and locking spring show light pitting, as does the scabbard which has been covered in a protective black paint finish. Faint markings on the blade spine but the date is not readable.
