Original era manufacture. Classic sword bayonet with a yataghan shaped blade, introduced for use with the breechloading Chassepot rifle in 1866. This example is marked St. Etienne Mars 1871 on the spine. The blade is bright and clean displaying some very light staining, and a touch of corrosion at the point. Dark steel patina finish to the guard, with a serial number 32511 (matching the scabbard) and below M1. A stylized prefix letter R precedes the serial numberDent-free steel scabbard with most of the original blue finish remaining, light scattering of surface corrosion.
