German 19th Century Short Sword, Gendarmerie?

Original era manufacture. German pattern short sword with a P-shaped guard, fishskin covered grip, bound with double strand wire. The polished steel blade measures 24 inches in length, with a few very shallow nicks in the cutting edge, needs a cleaning but no pitting. Black leather bodied scabbard with brass throat and chape, the tip of the leather body is broken and the end is held in place with a stitch. It needs a better repair but at least no one has tried electrical tape.
