Original period manufacture. A friend of ours recently brought two of these unique bayonets by for trade. Each had a similar nickel, or tinned finish to the metal (including the blade) and had the typical German modified frog stud on the scabbard. Besides the unique finish, under close examination I was able to make out a Crown M proof on the frog stud on each of the bayonets, one of course more clear than the other. It is my opinion that these were plated for Navy use, and then proofed on the scabbard studs. Other, typical style, Landwehr markings appear on the scabbard throats and scabbard studs of each, indicating Landwehr issue later on.In our own collection we have a Prussian pattern single shot pistol, M1850 I believe, which has a similar finish to this bayonet, and a tiny anchor stamped alongside the barrel, just above the stock. Also, we have the brown leather holster produced for Prussia to use with the M1851 Colt Navy revolver, it has the Crown M proof on its top strap. This example (we kept one for ourselves) retains most of this silver finish, except on the very tip of the blade. French Mutzig Imperial arsenal markings on the blade spine with a date of 186X, can't make out the last digit. A very sound bayonet, showing typical age and wear, but no issues. I'd really appreciate your feedback on this, I've never seen these modified this way before.
