Original era manufacture. An ornate, double sided parade flag measuring 66 x 44 inches. It is made of a blue, silk-like material, with matching embroidery on each side; FDJ-Grundorganisation "Wilhelm Pieck", Grenzzollamt (Border Customs Office) Invalidenstrasse.Three of the edges of the banner display a gold fringe, with five matching material straps holding the banner to its black painted pole. At top, is a simple poletop of cast aluminum in the shape of an inverted stirrup. It is attached to the pole by a simple nail, the straps by a dome-headed tack. Invalidenstrasse is an important main thoroughfare bisecting the city of Berlin. During the Cold War, a border crossing post was located here, dividing East and West Berlin. This unit banner evidently represents the Zoll unit stationed at that location. We purchased this flag around 1990, right after the Berlin Wall was torn down.
