Original period manufacture. Standard pattern French M1866 Chassepot bayonet with an 1867 Etienne arsenal mark on the spine. The blade is bright and clean, with some surface speckling near the point.Steel patina finish to the hooked guard and pommel, with evidence of old cleaned surface corrosion. Dark patina finish to the brass grip. Unit marked to 140. R.L.3.131. Steel patina finish to the scabbard body, exhibiting a few shallow dents along its length, and an elongated German pattern frog stud installed by its captors. An original patent leather frog was on the scabbard at the time of our purchase, it fits snugly preventing me from seeing if the serial numbers on the blade & scabbard match.
