German, Franco-Prussian War Era Tall Messkit,

Original era manufacture. A very tall, all steel construction messkit, which stands just over 8 inches in height, with a folding steel bale handle, and a black painted finish. The strap loop which is attached to the top of the messkit is loose and needs to be re-soldered. Several sets of period unit markings can be seen on both the top and bottom portions of the messkit, with similar markings appearing on each.The messkit is rather oval in shape, with one side being slightly flattened, but no the kidney shaped pattern adopted in 1887. On page 145, Volume I, of The German Infantry from 1871-1914, a similar messkit to ours can be seen in use.Overall sound condition except for the upper strap loop, the top fits very snug and takes a bit to get it loose.
