Original period manufacture. This is an unusual pattern, one I hadn't see before. It most closely resembles a pattern usually seen with Saxon issue marks, however this example is marked to IR 58 on the side of thecrossguard and the 14th regiment on the underside of the guard. Another unusual feature is the leather covered scabbard with only brass frog stud and ball tip. The unmarked blade shows considerable clouding and light pitting from old cleaned corrosion, however there is only one small nick in the cutting edge. The brass guard is slightly bent upwards and is a bit loose. The scabbard fits the blade properly however the stitching is open on the reverse at throat and tip. In closing I feel this is an early pattern one which may date to the late 1840's or early 1850's.
