Original era manufacture. Very sound, and scarce, M1857 Cavalry Carbine as usedduring the Franco-Prussian War, July 1870 till February 1871. It is an all matching numbered weapon, 4061, with the smaller components, including the screwheads, being numbered 61. The metal is bright with numerous original markings and proofs visible including the date of 1870. Beautiful bore with deep lands and grooves. Sound original stock with clear markings on the stock face and bottom. Brass butt plate is also serial numbered 4061 with unit markings on the tang. There is a small crack in the stock wrist as shown, it begins at the rear screw of the barrel and extends for about an inch with a downward curve. That's really about the only flaw in this old girl. There are scattered dings and dents to the stock from service use, but theM1857 carbinein our own collection shows similar. As a matter of fact, ours is serial numbered 4361, with the same year manufacture. I'd love to keep this one too but gotta avoid being my own best customer at times.
