Original period manufacture. Introduced in 1855 in an experimental version with a wrought iron barrel, adopted for service in 1857, being issued exclusively to Dragoon and Hussar regiments. Our example, overall length 31.5 inches, steel barrel, 15.43 mm, serial number 4361, was produced in 1870, one of 26,663 produced that year for service in the Franco-Prussian War. It bears unit markings on the top of the brass buttplate, 1 D 5 62 (1st Dragoon Rgt, 5th squadron, 62nd weapon). The serial number 4361, or 61 can be seen on the barrel, receiver, screwheads, bolt body and cocking mechanism. The rifling is strong, the bore is darkish and needs a brush through it. When the bolt is cocked, the needle can be removed for inspection. The stock is sound, appears to be original finish, with clear arsenal inspection stamps in several places. The wrist is not cracked, and the remainder of the wood shows honest saddle wear, with numerous small dings and shallow dents in the surface. There is a screw hole on the underside of the stock about four inches from the muzzle where a sling attachment was installed at one point, and three additional screw or mounting holes in the wood just below the receiver on the right side.Overall an honest, matching numbers Needle Gun Carbine from the Franco-Prussian War.
