Original era manufacture. Stamped brass helmet wappen with a gilt finish. Both pointed mounting prongs on the reverse are intact.Adopted in 1867 with the simplified economical version of the Prussian pickelhaube accepted in that year. It was a short lived design, its inherent weakness being the attaching prongs would allow the wappen to fly off the front of the helmet during vigorous activity. Since active military service sometimes provides such activity, the troops had a time keeping their helmet plates in place. This pattern was replaced in 1871, when the more sturdy and robust helmet was once more issued for combat use. Once again, the helmet wappen was securely held in place by the tried and true method of screwposts and attaching nuts.
