Original era manufacture. Quite similar to the standard pattern 1871 bayonet but with a sawback edge, maker marked on the ricasso Weyersberg with a Crown W 97 proof on the spine. The blade is bright, with scattered areas of age staining to the surfaces, no corrosion pitting, and the point remains quite sharp. Pleasing steel patina to the guard, with a mellow brass patina finish to the grip.Black leather body with brass fittings the stitching is sound, and the brass fittings have a matching patina. No unit markings on the guard or scabbard throat. I doubt if this bayonet ever saw much service use with the late issue marking. Subsequently care must be taken when drawing the blade from the scabbard, as the runners are tight. Grab hold of the scabbard throat, not the leather body when drawing the blade. Sawback versions of this handsome old bayonet are rather scarce, while often referred to as an "NCO" pattern. John Walters in his book The German Bayonet, states that this designation is incorrect, referring them as being issued as a tool.
