Original period manufacture. Polished steel blade measuring 30.5 inches in length, both sides of the blade are etched with a floral design, with a fouled anchor and sailing ship design. Retailer marked on the on the spine Muhlenfeld & Co. Barmen. There are a number of small shallow nicks in the cutting edge, none of them are very deep, but can be easily felt. The blade runs straight and true, with evidence of surface corrosion and some minor metal loss at the tip.Brass guard, backstrap and lion headed pommel, with an ivory grip bound with brass wire. The reverse side of the guard folds down, and is unit marked II. S.B. and property marked 46. The wire binding needs to be tightened up, and there are typical age and stress cracks in the grip surface. The lion head pommel does not have the red and green eyes, perhaps never had them.Leather bodied scabbard with sound stitching, and brass scabbard fittings. The drag displays wear from carry, and the top opening of the throat displays matching marks to the grip; II. S.B. 46. The connecting staple of the scabbard throat is missing, so the throat fitting can be removed from the scabbard. The blade fits the scabbard properly.
