At wars end she was one of the few ships allowed to Germany after the Versailles Treaty, where she served as a cadet training ship. In late August 1939 Schleswig-Holstein was moored in the port ofDanzig, where on the morning of September 1 1939, she fired on Polish positions and is considered to have fired the first shots of WWII.
