Original era manufacture. A very scarce pattern bayonet which was originally adopted in 1865 for the Dreyse Jagerbuchse Needle Gun. After the Franco-Prussian War and the adoption of the M1871 rifle and Jager rifle, the older 1865 pattern bayonets (three rivets on the grip) were rebushed to fit the smaller diameter rifle barrel. New production Jager bayonets were manufactured, this time with a five rivet pressed leather grip. This example is typical of its type with a steel patina finish to all of its metal parts, pressed leather grips and a near 20 inch steel blade. It shows scattered cleaned corrosion spotting but overall is very sound. Unit marked on the crossguard 15.J.1.214. Quite a scarce Imperial era bayonet.
