Original era manufacture. Massive service bayonet adopted for use with the 1871 service rifle. This example was issued to the 14th Saxon Infantry regiment Nr. 179 in 1892, and made by Simson & Co. Suhl. The blade is quite clean, unsharpened, with a few spots of surface corrosion. Unit marked on the steel crossguard, which matches the markings on the scabbard throat.Brass grip with a mellow patina and operable lock button and spring. Black leather bodied scabbard with sound stitching. Typically the lower fitting has a ball-tip, this one is without, perhaps a result of late production. At the time of our purchase the securing screw on the scabbard throat was missing. We had a donor scabbard in the parts bin which provided a period replacement. It fits fairly well but does not seat all the way down. The blade and scabbard fit together just fine. One of my all-time favorite bayonets.
