Original period manufacture. An early production model bayonet with the one piece wooden grip and a crown W 98 proof on the spine. This would possibly make this a trials bayonet as the Garde-Schutzen battalion was one of the units issued with the new Gewehr 98 rifle for trial purposes. The blade is basically straight with an even steel patina and what looks to be light service sharpening along its length. No damage to the one piece wood grip beyond some light surface denting or bumping. Dark steel patina to the guard and pommel, workable lock button. The leather bodied scabbard shows sound stitching and dark patina surfaces to the steel tip and throat. The leather has shrunk a bit from age and closes to within 4mm of the guard. On the guard and scabbard throat the following unit marks can be seen, G.S.2.215 (Garde-Schutzen Battalion2nd Company 215th Weapon). Almost kept this one..
