Original era manufacture. Massive blade and hilt and showing two matching unit marks on the guard and scabbard throat. The blade is maker marked PDL in an oval on one side of the ricasso and a crown proof on the other. The blade shows evidence of an old sharpening and a rather sizable nick in the edge. There is also some pitting from old cleaned corrosion. We shouldn't be a surprised that the blade shows use as the weapon was issued to both a Pioneer Battalion and a workman detachment for an Artillery Regiment. Both of those units needed a heavy bladed tool such as this for use. The leather scabbard body is very sound, tight stitching, with no dryrot. A nice old weapon that has seen a lot of history during its time.
