Original era manufacture. This great old helmet has a lot of soul in my opinion, and once was gracing our own collector shelf. At present, it represents an 1891 model enlisted helmet, with the only differences separating it from the earlier 1866 pattern, are the brass rib on the rear of the helmet, and the M1891 chinstrap lug attachments. In fact, I have always wondered if this helmet was not simply upgraded during the changes occurring in 1871 and 1891when the regulations changed, and that quite possibly it served during the Franco-Prussian War.At the time of our purchase the front visor and visor trim were loose and needed to be reattached, and the chinscales were missing some segments. A trip down to thehome of Chris Turner and Cameron Laughlin in Tucson, and a few extra dollars spent, resulted in the now sound helmet you see offered here. Tall leatherbody, with the early pattern Prussian wappen, round spike base with two ventilator holes, flat segment brass chinscales and the soldiers name and regiment clearly seen in the interior of the helmet. The leather liner is intact, and the red cloth adjusting string was inside the helmet linerat the time of our purchase, a nice little personalized touch. When the helmet was restored, the front visor was moved up into a higher position on the body in order for it to fitbetter, and a light polish was applied to the leather body for preservation. A few extra segments were installed in the chinstrap, and it was given a new leather backing to keep it all together. It is being offered for sale because of a lack of room in our collector cabinet, and to help fund a recent purchase forour collection. No cockade, never had one since we have owned it.
